Paper Quilt Panel

Quilt Inspired Paper Panel

In this week's art session we were working on a quilt inspired paper panel, with focus on geometric shapes and colour.
It is a collaborative art project that I want to continue with the following art groups as well. The students were given paper, cut in squares and trinangles in different sizes and colours. We started with green, blue and purple. (Which will be followed by pink, red, orange and yellow.) The students were then asked to arrange the triangle shapes on their paper square however they wanted. (To patiently wait until the last piece of paper has been glued by their class mates was probably the biggest challenge ;-)Finally all 12 pieces had to be arranged on a larger paper. Here we focused mainly on the colours, to achieve a well balanced panel piece. With this project I want to emphasize unity and variety in art and the school community.

Complementary Zebra 2A

Complementary Zebra

Mixed Media Project with Oil Pastels and Watercolour

What a joy to look at these Zebras! Great works art students!

We started with a guided pencil drawing of the zebra head. The students received a paper with a grid that helped them to draw the zebra with the right proportions. With the same grid on the white board I guided them through the drawing. We looked at different Zebra photos before the students started to draw their individual stripe pattern.

Then the students chose a pastel in their favourite colour and a complementary colour to colour the zebra. A third complementary colour was finally chosen for the watercolour background.

Picasso inspired self portrait 2A

Welcome to the new Autumn Art Club Course

for Grade 2

Picasso Inspired Self Portrait

What an Experience!

For some of the students it was actually the first time they were holding a paint brush in their hand. Now look what they have achieved!

"I am so proud of myself!" one girl said, when she looked at her first painting.

"I want to do arts forever!" I heard another student say.

Aquarell / Watercolour is a quite demanding medium to paint with. But as you can see, all students mastered the challenge, although it was not  always easy to find the right balance between paint and water. The results speak for themselves...

"Every child is an artist.
The problem is how to remain an artist one he gross up. "

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881 - 1973)

Focus:

In our first lesson we learned about Cubism,  Abstract Art and the colour wheel. The students watched a video about Abstract Art and learned about the Artist Pablo Picasso and Cubism. We had a look at some of Picassos portraits and discoverd, that the faces were painted from different sides.
The main focus of our course will be on colours. We talked about the colour wheel and learned about complementary colours.

Guided Drawing and Introduction to Water Colour painting:

I guide the students to draw a Picasso inspired face while using the whole space of the paper. They chose their favourite eye, nose, mouth and hair shapes and created their individual self portrait. After tracing the outlines with a Crayon again, we came to the most exciting part: which was of course the painting with watercolour.

"It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child."
